Robert Tibbo

In 2013, Montreal lawyer Robert Tibbo helped whistleblower Edward Snowden, then the most wanted man on the planet, hide out with refugee families in Hong Kong. Today, the lawyer and the three families who hosted Snowden are paying a high price for it.

A respected lawyer who has worked for 30 years to defend refugee rights in Hong Kong, Mr. Tibbo was forced to leave Chinese territory in November 2017 due to threats of arrest. He is now trying to defend his clients from a distance. The three families who hosted the American whistleblower in 2013, nicknamed the "Snowden Angels", must live with the fear of being deported to their country of origin at any time, where they risk imprisonment or even execution.

In 2017, LWBC was contacted by a Canadian NGO, For the Refugees, to assist Mr. Tibbo. After reviewing the case, Pascal Paradis, LWBC's Executive Director, travelled to Hong Kong in November 2017 to observe the situation and assist Mr. Tibbo in leaving the jurisdiction.
